80% of malware is powered by AI

Is your cyber security evolving with technology? It should be. Cyber criminals are weaponising AI and you need to be ready…

Imagine if I told you that the majority of current cyber attacks aren't conducted by humans, but by artificial intelligence.

This is the reality we face today.

Recent studies indicate that AI is responsible for 80% of ransomware attacks. That's four out of every five incidents.

And it's not limited to ransomware. AI is increasingly utilized to:

·         Craft more convincing phishing emails (messages designed to deceive you into clicking a link or revealing sensitive information)

·         Break passwords at incredible speeds

·         Circumvent CAPTCHAs (those small puzzles you solve online to prove you're human)

·         Produce fake customer service calls using deepfakes (AI-generated audio or video that replicates a real person's voice or appearance)

Why is this significant for small and medium-sized businesses?

The issue lies in speed and scale. AI-driven attackers can attempt thousands of break-ins in the time it takes a human to try just one.

While a business must secure every potential entry point, an attacker only needs to succeed once.

This imbalance makes it a substantial threat.

Traditional methods of combating malware, detecting it, removing it, and updating systems are struggling to keep pace. AI-driven attacks evolve faster than human teams can react. This necessitates a different approach to defense. Relying solely on antivirus software or occasional updates is no longer sufficient.

The positive aspect is that AI is also being employed defensively.

Security systems that detect suspicious activities, predict potential attacks, and even set traps for hackers are becoming more prevalent.

The key lies in a multi-layered strategy. Solid security fundamentals like patching and updates, combined with AI-driven defenses, human oversight, and clear governance.

The reality is that AI-driven cybercrime isn't disappearing. In fact, it's expected to increase. However, with the right mindset and proactive defenses, businesses don't have to be easy targets. Taking action now provides the best opportunity to stay ahead of attackers using AI for malicious purposes.
