Copilot could soon auto-open in Microsoft Edge

Using Copilot in your business? How would you like it to auto-open when you launch the Edge browser? It could be handy – and it might happen soon, if Microsoft’s testing goes well…

Microsoft is increasingly focusing on AI, and its latest initiative is to have Copilot automatically open when you start Microsoft Edge. Currently, to use Copilot in Edge, you need to click the small icon in the sidebar, which isn't a big hassle.

However, the auto-open feature would ensure Copilot is immediately available in the sidebar as soon as you launch your browser or open a new tab.

Some users will appreciate this, while others may not. Regardless, it's evident that Microsoft aims to make Copilot a regular part of the Edge experience.

Another feature under testing is an "Ask Copilot" button in the Settings menu. This means that if you're struggling to change a browser setting, you could simply ask Copilot for assistance instead of navigating through all the options. If effective, it could be a significant time-saver for businesses.

If your team uses Edge, here’s how you might benefit:

·         Faster troubleshooting: If something in Edge isn't working, instead of searching online or contacting IT, you could ask Copilot for help.

·         AI on standby: Whether you need assistance summarizing a lengthy article, brainstorming an email, or writing a quick message, Copilot would always be open and ready.

·         Enhanced security: Microsoft is also testing "Scareware Blocker," an AI-powered feature that helps identify and block scam websites in real time.

It's uncertain when these updates might be released, if at all. Microsoft often tests features in Edge Canary (its experimental version of Edge), but not everything makes it to the final version.

That being said, Microsoft is heavily promoting AI, so there's a strong possibility this will be implemented.

Auto-open for Copilot could be beneficial if you enjoy AI and want a built-in assistant that's always ready. However, if you prefer your browser to remain simple, this update might be bothersome.

Additionally, there's the concern of privacy. Microsoft hasn't detailed how this will function yet, but if Copilot is always active, some users might feel uneasy about it.

If implemented, Copilot could become a staple in Edge, aiding in smarter work, troubleshooting, and scam protection. If Microsoft addresses privacy concerns and offers the option to disable it (which is feasible), it could be a valuable addition.
